Memorial Drive Project
Update:
To seek a better position with Chet Edward’s Office
so that the city may obtain some funding for the Memorial
Drive Project, the City of Beverly Hills needed to improve
their position with the Waco Metropolitan Planning Organization.
The City of Beverly Hills is a Member of the Technical Committee
of the Waco Metropolitan Planning Organization.
The Waco Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) coordinates
transportation planning activities for all of McLennan County.
The MPO was established by the federal government to ensure
that transportation decisions within the MPO area are performed
in a continuing, comprehensive and cooperative process. The
MPO provides a forum for local input into the expenditure
of federal highway and transit dollars.
On February 22, 2007, I attended an MPO Policy Board Meeting
for the purpose of getting the MPO to change our category
for the construction of Memorial Drive to a Category Three.
The category that we are in at the present is nearly at the
bottom of the list. Moving to a “Category 3, Not Funded”
would have moved our city into a very good position to make
it possible for Congressman Edward’s office to seek
funding for the rebuilding of Memorial Drive. We are not asking
the MPO for any money. We are only asking for a vote to move
us into this new category. Instead the MPO Board voted against
us. I could have understood the MPO Board possibly voting
against us if we had been asking them for the four million
dollars plus to rebuild Memorial Drive; but we were not. We
were only asking them to move us to a Category Three position
Not Funded. We will continue to submit our proposal to the
MPO committee at a later date in order to get them to change
their minds and vote to let the City of Beverly Hills move
into this Category Three. We will keep everyone informed how
this will turn out.
